What Are Sump Pumps and How Do They Work?

sump pump is a small device that is submerged into a sump pit located at the lowest point of your house, typically the basement or crawl space. Sump pumps help you to avoid flooding - and the catastrophic damage that comes along with it - by funneling excess groundwater away from your property through a network of pipes.

When you experience heavy rain and the ground becomes oversaturated, the extra groundwater will flow towards the sump pit, either through drains or by natural water migration. When the pit fills with enough water, the sump pump float switch is activated and the pump is turned on. The sump pump then pumps the water out of the pit and away from your home, typically draining to the yard, a storm drain, a dry well, or a retention pond.

Sump Pumps are something we don’t usually think about until they fail. Although it's not too common, there are several reasons a sump pump may fail, including power outages, mechanical failures, or excessive use. When your sump pump does fail - or you lose power - the last thing you want is for water to be backed up and flood your basement. Fortunately, that's where battery backups come in! Sump pump battery backups work to supplement your primary pumps by giving you several additional hours of protection in the case that your primary pump fails.

Because of the high risks associated with sump pump failure, most major insurance companies suggest installing a battery backup sump pump. After all, if your basement does flood you will be the one most inconvenienced.

Do I Need A Sump Pump?

Even if your home is not prone to flooding, you may still benefit from a sump pump. Sump pump installation is especially important in the following cases:

  • You live in a climate that receives heavy rain or snow.
  • Your property is below the local water table.
  • Your property is on a flat plot with poor drainage.
  • You have poorly draining soil.
  • You've had water problems in the past.
  • Your basement is finished and serves as a living space.

Benefits of a Sump Pump

Despite the obvious of preventing your home from flooding, there are a number of added benefits to having a sump pump installed, including:

  • Protecting against sewage backup.
  • Reducing the risk of mold and mildew growth.
  • Improving indoor air quality.
  • Safeguarding metal appliances from corrosion.
  • Keeping your foundation intact.
  • Making basement warmer, drier, and more comfortable year-round.
