9 Ways to Maintain Your HVAC System and Keep It Running at Its Best

Replace Air Filters Regularly

The easiest way to improve your HVAC system’s efficiency is to replace the air filters regularly. For most homeowners, changing the air filter every 60 to 90 days is sufficient. If any of your family members have allergies or if you have multiple pets, replace the filter every 30 to 60 days instead.

Check the measurements on your current air filter to confirm the right sizing for your HVAC system. Look for a filter with a minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) rating between seven and 12. The higher the MERV rating, the more particles it removes, and the greater the efficiency boost it offers.

Program Your Thermostat

Next, set your thermostat for the season ahead. In the summer, set it between 76 to 78 degrees when your family is generally home and awake. When you’re typically out or asleep, set the temperature to increase by 8 to 10 degrees. In the winter, aim for 68 degrees while you’re home and awake. Then dial down the temperature overnight or during the workday.

When you use these guidelines, you’ll ensure that your HVAC system only runs when necessary. That means you can prevent it from overworking and keep it as efficient as possible.

Look for Air Leaks

To find leaks, turn off the HVAC system and close the windows. Then light some incense and hold it near common leakage sources like the baseboards, the door, the windows, and the outlets. If the smoke drifts toward or away from these spots rather than upward, you’ve found an air leak. To repair it, add weatherstripping to windows and seal small holes with caulk.

Open the Vents

When the temperature in your home feels a little off, you might have a habit of opening or closing vents to increase airflow. Although this method can help you cool down or heat up a room quickly, it can have a negative impact on your HVAC system.

Instead of adjusting the vents constantly, keep them open at all times so your HVAC system can condition your home evenly.
